Coating and Finish Colors & Info

We pride ourselves on offering a wide range of both performance enhancing and decorative coatings on our components. We offer a range of coatings from a high luster polished stainless to the more exotic Blue TiOx and Spectrum coatings. The following is a list and description of each coating we offer.

Stainless. Our stainless option includes an even satin finish stainless steel surface. No protective coating is applied and can be touched up with a cloth/light buffing"  

Black Nitride+ QPQ. Considered a top performing finish it is also known as Ferritic Nitrocarburizing. It is a process with a deep flat black OEM finish providing excellent lubricity, corrosion resistance, abrasion/scratch resistance, and an even, uniform look. An inexpensive coating applied by an industry leading firm is the closest to most OEM pistol slide and barrel finishes. The quench-polish-quench (QPQ) process ensures a smooth and even coating that naturally retains lubrication properties throughout the treated surface.

Physical Vapor Deposition, or PVD, is a term used to describe a family of coating processes. The most common of these PVD coating processes are evaporation (typically using cathodic arc or electron beam sources), and sputtering (using magnetic enhanced sources or "magnetrons", cylindrical or hollow cathode sources). All of these processes occur in vacuum at working pressure (typically 10-2 to 10-4 mbar) and generally involve bombardment of the substrate to be coated with energetic positively charged ions during the coating process to promote high density. Additionally, reactive gases such as nitrogen, acetylene or oxygen may be introduced into the vacuum chamber during metal deposition to create various compound coating compositions. The result is a very strong bond between the coating and the substrate and tailored physical, structural and tribological properties of the film.

Performance PVD Coatings

Gold TiN (Titanium Nitride): The same process that is used to coat high performance steel cutting tools is used in our Gold TiN (Titanium Nitride) coating. An attractive gold in color the gold TiN coating is considered one of our performance enhancing coatings and provides both increased lubricity and wear resistance to the steels surface.

Coefficient of Friction - 0.35

Black DLC (Diamond Like Carbon): A deep, dark gloss finish our DLC coating is the toughest performance PVD coating we carry. The Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating provides superior surface toughness with increased lubricity and heat dispersion. Used to coat high speed CNC steel cutting tools this DLC coating provides the toughest performance of our coatings, and looks good doing it!

Coefficient of Friction - 0.15

Rose (TiCN): The hardest of coatings. Similar in performance to Gold TiN our Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) maintains an attractive and stunning reddish/rose color that holds up very well.

Coefficient of Friction - 0.30

Copper TiAlN (Titanium-Aluminium Nitride): Gorgeous copper color with shine. Similar to a shiny new penny in appearance this offers a very unique and eye catching design with the polished shine from the finish. Its also a great performance coating and competes well with other hard coatings.

Coefficient of Friction - 0.35

Stealth Grey (CrN) - A proprietary medium/dark grey coating specially designed for firearms applications. A CrN (chromium nitride) based coating. Designed specifically for performance with a hard surface and low coefficient of friction. It is an attractive polished grey appearance.

Decorative PVD coatings

Blue (Titanium Oxide:) Developed through the same process as the gold TiN the Blue TiOx coating naturally occurs in the same PVD TiN process. The finish turns blue prior to turning gold. Although the blue TiOx offers a slight increase in surface hardness and lubricity we do not consider it a performance coating as it is pulled halfway through the full TiN process to capture the blue color, therefore not obtaining the same level of performance as Gold TiN. Blue finishes can vary by batch from deep blue to light blue hues, much like our Spectrum coating no two barrels are the same! The blue has accented colors as well and will show small areas of purple or gold in recessed areas of the barrel.

*Note: expect Blue TiOx to wear at steel on steel contact points faster than performance coatings. Blue will wear drastically faster than other coatings and should be considered cosmetic only. You you will have some bare steel spots on contact points after a single range trip and/or light scratching at installation. Please be aware our other performance coatings above are extremely durable. Blue PVD is the weakest coating available as far as abrasion resistance.

Spectrum (Rainbow) Titanium Oxide: Titanium Oxide based our Spectrum is one of the most eye-catching coatings available. Every barrel is different with a kaleidoscope of changing hues and shades brought out through a special PVD Titanium Oxide application process. Considered a decorative coating more than performance it does offer a slight increase in corrosion, and wear resistance.

Battleworn Cerakote: Custom, high-end cerakote professionally applied in a "Battleworn" look. Normally solid cerakote colors do not hold up or perform well on high contact parts as the cerakote scratches at points of contact. After lots of requests and testing we have found that the "worn" pattern of cerakote serves this purpose well and even with expected wear at contact points really looks great. This gives us the ability to provide coatings not generally available through the PVD/CVD/Nitriding/plating processes (such as red).
