FAQs

What is the most durable coating offered by True Precision?

The most durable coating offered by True Precision is Black Nitride QPQ. It is known for its exceptional toughness and practical/tactical advantages and is used by many OEM manufacturers under their own trade names. Black Nitride is applied through an immersion treatment process that fully penetrates the steel, including the bore and chamber of the firearm. Unlike surface coatings, which merely sit on top of the steel, Black Nitride undergoes a superficial hardening process within the steel itself.

The unique properties of Black Nitride result in increased bore life and enhanced part durability. This coating provides excellent resistance to wear, corrosion, and abrasion, making it an ideal choice for firearms that are subjected to harsh conditions and frequent use.

What is the difference between PVD coating and Black Nitride treatment?

Black Nitride Treatment:

  • Also known as "Melonite" or by other trade names, Black Nitride is a tough and practical/tactical finish.
  • It involves an immersion treatment of the steel and is present in the bore and chamber of the firearm parts.
  • Black Nitride is designed to increase bore life and enhance part durability.
  • The treatment superficially hardens the surface of the steel by penetrating it, unlike a coating that sits on the surface.
  • It results in a deep jet-black color compared to the Black DLC (PVD) coating, which has a dark "smoky black" color.

PVD Coating:

  • PVD is a thin film outer coating applied to True Precision barrels and slides to protect, lubricate, and enhance the finish of steel parts.
  • It can come in various colors, with the multi-color version known as "Spectrum," which creates unique color patterns, making each part distinct.
  • PVD-applied coatings can vary in hardness and wear resistance, with some coatings starting to wear upon installation when metal-on-metal contact occurs.
  • The relative wear resistances of the PVD coatings depend on the specific coating used.

Additional Note:

  • The Satin Stainless finish is achieved through a smooth glass bead blast on the raw stainless steel, without any coating or treatment on or in the steel.
  • While True Precision's barrels are made from 416R stainless steel and their slides from 17-4 stainless steel, which are corrosion and rust-resistant, they are not rust-proof.
  • Proper lubrication and cleaning are recommended, especially in salty or humid environments.
  • Raw stainless parts can be polished, re-blasted, or coated by the end user to achieve a new or fresh look throughout their lifespan.

Is it normal for the coating to wear overtime on my part?

Yes, it is normal for the coating on your barrel or slide to wear over time, especially with regular use. The process of firing rounds, slide cycling, and all metal-on-metal actions create friction on the surface coating, leading to gradual wear. Wear areas on parts can also vary by model of firearm as some have a higher or harsher wear charactaristic over other models. This wear is a natural part of the parts' life cycle and does not necessarily indicate a defect in the coating or the firearm itself.

Although coating wear on parts is most notable on PVD finishes in high friction areas, even the most durable coatings, such as Black Nitride, will experience wear over extended periods of use. Also keep in mind that some finishes such as Blue PVD and Spectrum PVD will naturally wear much quicker than performance based PVD coatings such as DLC, TiN, and TiCN.

Regular maintenance and proper cleaning can help extend the life of the coating and preserve the overall performance of the firearm. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for maintenance and care to ensure your firearm continues to function reliably over the long term.

What is the break in period for True Precision parts?

The break-in period for True Precision parts is recommended to be a minimum of 100 rounds, using ball ammunition. For coated barrels, there might be a need for an initial light polishing of the feed ramp due to the potential buildup of coating material. If needed, the feed ramp can be easily touched up with a felt or rubber polishing tip, never use sandpaper or a grinding stone on a feed ramp. Some users may experiance reliability issues during early use due to tightness of the parts before full break-in. This break-in process allows the different parts to settle in and function optimally, ensuring reliable performance and longevity. Any reliability issue experianced early on will generally cease after this suggested break-in period. Use does not effect your warranty.

Can I use +P ammunition with my True Precision parts?

True Precision barrels can be used with factory new, quality made SAAMI spec +P ammunition. True barrels are NOT rated for whats called "+P+" or "++P" over-pressure ammo nor are they rated for reloads or ammunition made with recycled or low quality components. Keep in mind that +P or "hot" ammo should be used in moderation and that smaller or lighter handguns and their parts will wear quicker than larger or heavier firearms.

What is the difference between broach cut rifling and button rifling?

Broach Cut Rifling: Broach cut rifling is a traditional method of rifling that involves using a broach, which is a cutting tool with spiral-shaped edges. The broach is pulled or pushed through the barrel, and as it moves through the bore, it cuts the grooves into the metal. This method is generally slower and requires more manual labor, making it a more time-consuming process. However, it is known for producing precise and consistent rifling.

Advantages of Broach Cut Rifling:

  • High precision and consistency in the rifling pattern.
  • Used in custom or high-end barrels where precision is crucial.

Button Rifling: Button rifling is a more modern and efficient method of rifling that is optimal for mass production. In this process, a hardened, shaped "button" with spiral grooves is pulled or pushed through the barrel, displacing the metal around it to form the rifling. This method allows for faster rifling production and is commonly used in mass production of barrels. While "quicker and pretier" than broach cut rifling this process can impart excessive stress into the steel of the barrel as the steel is not removed to form the rifling but pushed/forced into shape. This requires the part to be correctly stress-relieved and checked to ensure warping or stress areas are not present. If these additional steps are not carefully adhered to poor accuracy and possible safety issues with steel stress/hardness can be a result.

The methods above represent the large majority of pistol barrel manufacturing. True Precision has a commitment to making the most accurate, most precise barrel possible, or this reason we indivually broach cut the rifling in each barrel.
