Understanding the Sig P365 Lineup: Features, Sizes, and Compatibility
The Sig Sauer P365 has become one of the most versatile and widely adopted concealed carry pistols in recent years. What started as a micro-compact 9mm with impressive capacity has evolved into an entire family of models, each tailored to different needs. Whether you want the smallest possible footprint for daily carry, a longer slide for improved accuracy and increased velocity, or an integrated compensator for enhanced recoil control, there is a P365 configuration to suit you. This guide breaks down the differences in barrel length, slide length, grip sizes, and compatibility, especially when it comes to comped versions, so that you can choose the right model for your needs.
Quick Guide to the P365 Lineup:
Barrel Lengths:
- 3.1" – Standard P365, & P365X; most compact and easiest to conceal.
- 3.7" – P365XL and XMACRO; longer sight radius and improved control.
- 4.3" – P365-FUSE; longest barrel for maximum stability and performance.
Grip Sizes:
- Compact Grip – Standered P365; smaller frame, holds 10–12 rounds.
- Extended Grip – XL, XMACRO, P365X, and FUSE models; improved control and up to 17 rounds.
Slide Lengths:
- Compact – Standard P365; quick handling and shorter profile.
- Extended – XL and FUSE; steadier sight picture and better recoil control.
Comped Models:
- Spectre Comp, XMACRO Comp, XL Comp, and AXG Legion.
- Factory configuration works only with non-threaded 3.1" barrels.
- Threaded barrel setups require a slide and barrel swap.
Barrel Lengths:
One of the most noticeable differences between P365 models is the barrel length. The original P365 uses a 3.1-inch barrel, which is perfect for maximum concealment and a quick draw from the holster. The XL variant steps up to a 3.7-inch barrel, adding increased velocity and a bit more weight toward the muzzle, which helps reduce felt recoil. Then there is the P365-FUSE, which stretches the barrel to 4.3 inches for the best control and performance in the lineup, while still maintaining the sleek profile of the standard P365.
Longer barrels generally mean higher muzzle velocity and improved accuracy, while shorter barrels keep the pistol compact and easy to conceal. The right choice depends on whether your priority is all-day comfort or enhanced shooting performance.
Slide Lengths:
Slide length goes hand-in-hand with barrel size and can change the overall balance of the pistol. Standard P365 models have a short slide that keeps the gun light and quick to handle. The XL and FUSE models use a longer slide, which improves sight alignment, adds weight for stability, and provides more space for optics.
A shorter slide can make the pistol easier to conceal under light clothing, while a longer slide helps with follow-up shots and target transitions. It comes down to whether you prefer fast handling or a steadier sight picture.
Grip Sizes:
The grip module determines how the pistol fits your hand and how many rounds it can carry. Standard P365 models have a compact grip that keeps the gun small and discreet, usually holding 10 to 12 rounds. The XL, XMACRO, P365X, and FUSE models have extended grips that improve control and increase capacity, with the XMACRO capable of holding up to 17 rounds.
One model to note here is the Sig P365X. This is a cross between a P365 XL lower and a standard 3.1" upper. Allowing you to have the best of both worlds in terms of concealability and magazine capacity. Many prefer this model as the larger grip also allows for more control when shooting, but still allows for comfortable everyday carry.
One of the advantages of the P365 platform is that grip modules are interchangeable, so you can change the size and feel without buying a whole new firearm.
Comped Versions and Compatibility:
Sig offers several models with integrated compensators, including the Spectre Comp, XMACRO Comp, XL Comp, and AXG Legion. These built-in ports help reduce muzzle rise, making follow-up shots faster and smoother. However, they also limit compatibility. Factory comped slides only work with non-threaded 3.1-inch barrels. Unfortunately, you cannot use a threaded barrel with a comped slide, as the geometry of the slide does not allow you to install a threaded barrel. If you want to run a threaded barrel and external compensator, you will need to replace both the slide and barrel with non-comped versions.
Many shooters make this change to run aftermarket compensators like the True Precision True-Lock or Micro Compensators, which can offer both improved recoil control and a different aesthetic. This switch also allows you to use many different barrel extenders, such as suppressors or flash hiders.
Choosing the Right Model for You:
If deep concealment is your top priority, the standard P365 with its short slide, compact grip, and 3.1-inch barrel is hard to beat. The P365XL strikes a nice balance with its longer barrel and grip for added control without being overly large. For those who want maximum capacity and shootability, the P365-FUSE or XMACRO are the top picks. And if you prefer a factory-built recoil solution, an integrated compensator model like the Spectre Comp might be right for you.
